Week 3 of the 2017 NCAA football season is now a matter of record. The following are seven reactions the Grueling Truth came away with…
1) Clemson is a legit big-time program
The Tigers don’t need Deshaun Watson to be a big-time program and you have to look no further than what they did to Louisville’s explosive offense to see that. They may be the best team in all of college football right now.
2) It’s hard to win with just one great football player
This isn’t basketball: If you want to win a championship in football, you need to have a complete team. The Louisville Cardinals are shining examples of this, as Lamar Jackson found himself out-manned and overrun by the Clemson Tigers defense. Jackson is a great player and if Bobby Petrino had recruited a defense, maybe Jackson would have won back-to-back Heisman Trophies.
3) Texas got the right coach in Tom Herman
The Longhorns almost upset heavily favored USC Saturday night in Los Angeles. So how can a team look so inept against Maryland a couple of weeks ago yet this weekend look so good against high-powered USC? I’ll tell you in one word, and that word is “coaching”! With Herman, the Longhorns will be back to national prominence in a year or two at most; Longhorn fans can just relax and join the ride.
4) Kentucky could challenge Georgia in SEC East
Kentucky won at South Carolina Saturday to go 3-0 on the season and the Cats have the look of a contender in the East. They finally have the right man to coach the Cats since Hal Mumme was fired over 15 years ago.
5) Where did Mississippi State come from?
I did not expect the LSU Tigers to get manhandled by any team in 2017, and Mississippi State doing so was that much more surprising. Can the Bulldogs challenge in the SEC? They have a talented roster and, while I don’t think they will unseat Alabama, this could be a 9- or 10-win team.
6) Oregon, Nebraska headed in opposite directions
The Ducks had a nice road win over a Wyoming team that is expected to be good this year. After a few years off the national stage, the Ducks look poised to make another run at national prominence. Nebraska on the other hand, go their butts whupped by Northern Illinois: The Cornhuskers are a long way from the glory days of Tom Osborne.
7) Any Given Saturday
Even though the Texas Longhorns were given no shot of beating the USC Trojans, the Longhorns almost proved the doubters wrong. forcing the Trojans to play two overtimes to get the win. Howard’s win over UNLV, and Liberty’s win over Baylor should show everybody that the underdog these days are much more talented than they were 20 years ago when large-scale upsets like this happened very rarely.
