Isn’t it nice to start a week without the big news of a star receiver getting released or Grey Cup ticket prices being slashed? Focus in the CFL has now shifted from all of the gossip off the field to what is actually happening on it.
We’re down to the second-to-last week of the regular season, and there’s still a lot that needs to be decided. First place in the East is still up for grabs, and the possibility that we see a three-way tie for second in the West.
This time of the season can present some different challenges as some teams (Calgary) already have a playoff spot clinched and they just want to get to the playoffs without injury. This week I want to focus on the teams that still have something to play for, but I wouldn’t fault you for rolling with certain Saskatchewan Roughriders this week, either: You can bet that Darian Durant doesn’t want to close Taylor Field with another loss while there are some other players that just want to be on the team next year. Figuring out who that will be can be tricky, so keeping an eye on starting line-ups is going to be imperative.
With all this in mind, here’s who I’m rolling with in DraftKings CFL daily fantasy footballthis week.
Henry Burris (OTT QB $10,100): Smilin’ Hank has been playing like his 2015 MOP self and you can bet Ottawa wants first place in the East. Winnipeg is fighting for a home playoff game as well but their secondary gives up a lot of yards. Hank has passed for 811 yards over his past two games so I’m not going to be shy about rolling with him in DFS. The Bomber defense is at their best when they’re creating turnovers but if Burris and the RedBlacks can keep those to a minimum, he should have another near 400 yard game.
Greg Morris (SSK RB $2,500): This play totally depends on whether Morris gets the start this Saturday but as of Tuesday, Joe McKnight hasn’t practiced after a nasty hit from Montreal’s Winston Venable on the last play of last weekend’s game. Morris was taking reps with the first team and Chris Jones liked what he saw so if he’s given the assignment on Saturday, you can’t ignore the $2,500 price tag for a starting running back. Roughrider running backs have had an average of 17 touches per game over the past five games so jump all over this bargain if Morris’ name is called. He’s only had 18 touches this season in limited work with Edmonton and Saskatchewan but he’s averaged 11 yards per touch.
Derel Walker (EDM WR $9,300): Reports in Edmonton say Adarius Bowman was not on the practice field on Tuesday. If Bowman is in any danger in missing this weekend’s game against Hamilton or if he’s simply limited, it’s time to roll with Derel Walker. It’s a formidable one-two punch in the City of Champions so you can’t go wrong with either receiver against a Hamilton secondary that has struggled a bit this season. If you’re looking to save cash here, roll with Brandon Zylstra ($4,000) who could see even more targets if Bowman is limited.
Terrence Toliver (HAM WR $8,100): Toliver has returned to being a threat in the Tiger-Cat receiving core with 18 targets and 185 receiving yards over the past two games. The Eskimos secondary has taken a hit too with Brandyn Thompson and Patrick Watkins both being banged up. Zach Collaros could return to the field this Friday and that only adds to Toliver’s potential.
Clarence Denmark (WPG Flex $7,100): Clarence Denmark was let go by the Bombers last off-season after the offseason acquisitions of Weston Dressler and Ryan Smith. He was then brought in by the Saskatchewan Roughriders and cut there as well. Denmark made it back to Winnipeg in Week 7 and has scored 8 touchdowns on the year including a score in five straight games. It’s worth watching where he lines up this week as Darvin Adams is expected to return, but there are a lot of yards to go around against Ottawa’s eighth-ranked pass defense.
