The 5 Biggest Stories in the NFL for August 9th 2017
1) Will Ezekiel Elliott be suspended?
The NFL is investigating a number of incidents involving the second-year back. There is the domestic abuse accusation that Elliott was cleared of, the 100 mph speeding ticket, and the recent incident where Elliott was accused of punching a DJ at a night club. For the last one, police have suspended the investigation because the accuser has been uncooperative. So why would the NFL feel the need to suspend Elliott? The domestic abuse incident brought no charges for Elliott, the speeding ticket is a speeding ticket and so far no charges have been filed in the assault case. Now if he is found to have been in an altercation with the DJ, then fine, suspend him. But as of now, there is no reason to suspend Elliott. I will say, however, where there is smoke, there is usually fire, so the Cowboys do need to get Elliott some kind of help before he does something that does get him suspended or even worse, thrown in jail.
2) Will Cam Newton be ready at the start of the season?
Newton had his shoulder surgically repaired in the off-season and was just recently seen throwing to receivers for the first time. He has reported of shoulder fatigue and soreness. The good news for Panthers fans is that the team still expects Newton to be ready by the start of the season.
3) Roger Goodell wants a shorter Preseason for the fans and players
Yeah right. Goodell wants a shorter preseason so he can add in two more regular season games and jack up his TV contracts even more! He said fans are always complaining to him about having to buy preseason tickets at regular season prices. If he was truly concerned by that, why wouldn’t he just mandate that teams drop ticket prices for preseason games? That’s right, he won’t! Goodell and NFL ownership couldn’t care less about the welfare of the fans or the players and this is simply another of example of that.
4) Devonta Freeman gets a contract extension
The Falcons have signed Freeman to a 5-year contract extension. Is this a smart move? The short answer is, yes. Freeman is a big part of what the Falcons do and to lock him up now ensures that Atlanta will not have to worry about a franchise back for the future. The big question for me would be, what does this mean for Tevin Coleman? Last year, Freeman and Coleman split time and in the future, I do not see the Falcons paying two running backs starting money.
5) Pro-Kaepernick Rally to be held by Spike Lee
If you read my articles, you know I support Colin Kaepernick and think he deserves a shot in the NFL. But, come on, Spike Lee holding a rally for him? Spike Lee is nothing but a race-baiting ass who has made a living off of making bad movies that are racially charged. This rally will hurt Kaepernick’s plight more than it will help it, as it proves that signing him would be a major distraction. Kap just needs to sit back and relax, because before the year is over, there will be a team that will need his services. As this goes to press Spike Lee has announced this is not being organized by him. Maybe Kap told him to shutup!
