Before I begin, full disclosure: I do not support Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, as my politics are Libertarian. I think politics is corrupt beyond belief and unfortunately so are professional sports.

President Donald Trump says National Football League owners should “fire” players who dare to kneel in protest during the national anthem. And Trump’s encouraging spectators to walk out in protest.

Trump said in a rally in Alabama on Friday that “They’re ruining the game,” he said, adding “That’s a total disrespect of our heritage. That’s a total disrespect of everything that we stand for.” He then encouraged NFL franchise owners to act.

Said Trump to loud applause from his zombie followers who will agree with anything he says like a good group of sheeple: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you’d say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired.”

Trump, who was in Alabama campaigning for Sen. Luther Strange, also added that a decline in NFL ratings is because of “yours truly” as well as what he described as a decline in violence in the game. The former New Jersey Generals owner claimed that players are being thrown out for aggressive tackles, and complained that NFL football is “not the same game.”

The NFL has enforced stricter rules on aggressive play to make professional football a softer game but look at former players like Ricky Dixon and his battle with ALS, and you’ll see why the NFL is trying to make the game safer.

In July of this year, a report on 202 former football players found evidence of debilitating brain disease linked to repeated head blows in nearly all of them. NFL officials have agreed to pay $1 billion to retired players who claim the league misled them about the dangers of head trauma caused by playing football. Do Trump’s comments mean that he doesn’t care about NFL players or is this just his typical ignorance of the hard facts?

But my biggest concern with Trump’s statements on the NFL is this: With natural disasters, terrorism and the threat of nuclear war with North Korea in our faces, maybe the president should focus his attention on these issues, rather than worrying about a game?

Roger Goodell responds to Donald Trump

Commissioner Goodell released a statement this morning stating, “The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture. There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we’ve experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.”

Now, calling the NFL an “overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities” is a stretch to say the least, especially when you consider how quickly the league will rip a team from a community if they can get a better stadium deal somewhere else. In all reality, the NFL franchise owners do what is best for profits. The NFL today still treats retired players poorly and what they have done is based on public demand and legal action, not because they care.

Is Donald Trump right?

No, he isn’t!

It is ironic that Trump’s zombies call Colin Kaepernick disrespectful for silently taking a knee during the national anthem while ignoring the fact that Trump refused to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, over 50,000 other young men without connections had to serve and die.

North Korea requires by law that all citizens stand during public performance of the country’s national anthem as does the Philippines  – Does Trump really think NFL players should be required to stand for ours?

The NFL has said they understand why players protest and that they are OK with it; why should anyone else care? And can’t we all agree as Americans that the right to protest is a right that must be protected in this country, even if you don’t necessarily agree with that protest?

Apparently, Donald Trump can’t.
