NFL news? We’ve got you covered! The following are the Grueling Truth’s top stories from around the league for Friday, August 18th.
1) Will Josh Gordon be reinstated?
The answer appears to be no. When asked about Gordon at a fan forum in Cleveland on Thursday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the receiver’s reinstatement is “not under active consideration to my knowledge, at least it hasn’t gotten to my desk yet,” per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Cleveland Browns executives said they would welcome him back if reinstated, but that does not look like it will happen anytime in the foreseeable future.

2) Seahawks sign center Justin Britt to extension
Center Justin Britt signed a three-year extension Thursday with the Seattle Seahawks, the team announced. The pact is worth $27 million, with Britt earning $13.25 in the first year of the new deal, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. It also includes $15 million in guarantees, Rapoport reported. Britt has been the bright spot on a below-average offensive line and is a player the Seahawks can ill afford to lose.
3) Are Blake Bortles’s days as starting Jaguars QB numbered?
Bortles, after another poor start, is now facing criticism from his head coach.
“It’s this simple: I’m looking for the best person to lead this offense,” Marrone told reporters, per John Oehser of the team’s website. “[The QB position] is right up there for grabs, and either person can take it.” Marrone added that “It’s not like [Bortles isn’t] the quarterback. He’s got to go earn it.”
Chad Henne is Bortles’s main competition and while the Jags have stockpiled a ton of talent on their roster, it’s starting to look like they made a huge mistake selecting Bortles at no. 3 in the 2014 Draft.
4) Raider Sean Smith facing jail time
Sean Smith is facing up to seven years in prison if convicted of felony assault charges. The 30-year-old Oakland Raiders cornerback was arrested Thursday and charged with two felonies stemming from a July 4 incident involving his sister’s boyfriend.
Smith was charged with felony assault and felony battery after he allegedly beat up his sister’s boyfriend and then stomped on his head, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and online jail records obtained by USA Today.
His bail was set at $80,000 and his first court appearance is scheduled for September 29.
5) Jay Cutler has solid outing in Miami
Cutler didn’t play long, but he did play well. He looked comfortable in the Miami Dolphins offense, going 3-of-6 for 24 yards. To me, the big thing here was not the stats, but the fact that he looked like he belongs in the Dolphins offense.
6) Colts lose center Ryan Kelly to injury
The Indianapolis Colts have lost another important player to the injury bug. Starting center Ryan kelly will miss significant time because of an injury to his foot that will require surgery. The best-case scenario for Kelly is that he will be out for six weeks.
