There are always plenty of surprises in the NFL Draft.  Here are a few to look for.

Joe Mixon will go in the 1st Round

To quote Doc Holiday from the movie Tombstone “My hypocrisy knows no bounds.”  Joe Mixon is a first round talent, someone will look the other way with and take him in the first.  My guess is that he does not get by Tampa Bay.

Christian McCaffrey, not Solomon Thomas will be the First Stanford Player Drafted

McCaffrey was the top prospect based on what he did on the field.  Thomas will likely go lower than expected because one or two teams will decide to draft an offensive player instead.  McCaffrey is likely at the very top of more than one draft board.

Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker will fall out of the Top 10

Both are top five talent, but I’m not sure if two teams will go safety that high.  Once again, it comes down to teams deciding to pick an offensive player when maybe they shouldn’t.

Deshaun Watson is the 3rd Quarterback Taken

Mitchell Trubisky will most likely end up with the Jets and I think it is Patrick Mahomes who the Browns covet.  If this stands Watson could end up with the Cardinals or more likely falling farther, possibly as far as the Texans.  If someone trades up to take a quarterback, all bets are off and the rush is on.

Top Defensive Backs will Drop out of the First Round

With the wealth of talent at defensive back, draft position may be largely based in fit and preference.  With that in mind, there will likely be two or three defensive backs available in the second round, who were viewed as sure first rounders.

Eight Defensive Backs will go in the 1st round including Three Ohio State Defensive Backs in Top 10

It is not only a deep group, but a group with a lot of top end talent.  In a passing league, top shelf pass defenders will not last long.

No Michigan Player will be Drafted in the 1st Round

While Jabrill Peppers, Taco Charlton and Jourdan Lewis all could go in the first, but I could see each of them falling out of the first.

3 players from 4 Different Schools will be Drafted in the 1st Round

Clemson, LSU, Ohio State, and Alabama will each see four players selected in the first round.  Alabama could have as many as five if Cam Robinson is drafted in the first round.  If I am dead wrong about my Michigan prediction, they could be a dark horse fifth school with three players drafted in the first round.

2 corners from 3 Different Schools will be Drafted in the 1st Round

With Ohio State it is a given.  Washington would have nearly been a sure thing if not for Sidney Jones’ injury.  Florida could also join this group if Quincy Wilson continues to rise and if Teez Tabor remains high on someone’s board despite his workouts.  Colorado is a dark horse candidate here where many teams are high on Chidobe Awuzie and/or Ahkello Witherspoon.

Zane Gonzalez will be drafted by the end of the 3rd round

With the increased difficulty of kicking extra points, kickers are more important now than ever.  Gonzalez is not the only rookie kicker you will see in the NFL this fall, but he is the only one getting any pre draft hype.  Someone who is desperate for consistency at the position will reach.

Veteran Running Backs will Sign

During the course of the draft, or in its immediate aftermath expect to see veteran running backs like LeGarrette Blount find a home.  We have already seen Adrian Peterson sign this week, as teams miss out on their draft targets at the position, they will go the more expensive route.  Also don’t be surprised if Marshawn Lynch is dealt somewhere on draft day.
