A.J. Green is one of the most respectful players in the NFL and on Sunday he was tossed from the game for putting Jalen Ramsey in a headlock and slamming him to the ground during the Cincinnati Bengals’ week 9 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ramsey was being rough and physical throughout the first half of the game, but I have seen A.J. deal with worse in the past. So what happened to this respectful player who doesn’t even celebrate, did Ramsey make him snap?
3-4 and still a shot at the playoffs
This was a must-win game for the Bengals as they started a three-game road trip which would decide the teams fate. A.J. Green is not a selfish player he is a “team first” guy and guys who did what he did are usually selfish players that are “me first” guys. You know the type? Hey, I was being disrespected and no one disrespects me, and I don’t care if it hurts my team or not, I am a man and as a man, I had to respond. That is simply not the type of player Green has been.
Why else would A.J. Green react the way he did?
Simple: He’s tired of the crap that goes with being a Bengal – and it wouldn’t be the first time the Bengals had chased off or ruined a great player. Look no farther than the cases of Carl Pickens, Corey Dillon and Carson Palmer: They were all big-time players that grew weary of the Bengals organization’s lack of commitment to winning. They all whined their way out of Cincinnati. Remember last year when Green was held out of the last two games of the season when doctors had cleared him to play? Of course, the Bengals had a B.S. excuse, but the fact was that, if he’d played those last two games and managed just decent numbers, the Bengals would have had to pay him a sizable bonus. Am I crazy for thinking that’s why they didn’t play him? I don’t think I am.
Is Andy Dalton the next one that wants out?
The Bengals’ lack of commitment to win chased off Carson Palmer and I see a very real chance that the same thing might to be about to happen with Dalton. Over the last two years, they have lost his number 2 and 3 receivers to free agency and the only two good offensive linemen that the Bengals had. Dalton takes a three-step drop and at the end of the third step he already has a man in his face. He is constantly taking hits and you have fans bitching about him that have no idea that it is because of the players around him and more importantly the coaches and team management.
Can this be fixed?
Marvin Lewis being fired on the flight home would help, but that’s probably not going to happen. Even if they did it still wouldn’t matter because in the end it all falls on Mike Brown and his lack of understanding of what it takes to win or possibly worse he may not care if the Bengals win or not. I think Brown wants to win I just think he is clueless on how to get it done.
