Marvin Lewis just got his contract extended thru 2019. No really, he did! Yes the same Marvin Lewis who in 15 years has won zero playoff games; yes the same Marvin Lewis who has led the Bengals to back-to-back losing seasons. Three weeks ago it was reported that Marvin Lewis wanted out and Bengals fans rejoiced. Today it was announced he was back and Bengal nation is in the proverbial pit of misery.

Has Marvin changed the culture in Cincinnati?

When Marvin got to Cincinnati in 2003 the Bengals hadn’t been to the playoffs since 1990 and had not had a winning season since then. Marvin came in and the Bengals had back-to-back non-losing seasons at 8-8. Then came that magic season of 2005. The Bengals beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh and won there first ever AFC North title. They hosted Pittsburgh in the playoffs but you all know the story from there–Palmer went down, the Bengals went down.

Since that season the Bengals have made the playoffs six times but have never won a playoff game. Is that Marvin’s fault? Of course it is. If they would have won they would have gotten the credit. The coaching in those games has been pathetic, especially the game management, which Marvin is sorely lacking at.

The culture in 2002 was that the Bengals were a poorly run organization that was nowhere near winning a Super Bowl. What has the perception been under Marvin? The perception is that the Bengals are a poorly run organization with undisciplined players that can’t win a playoff game. So has the culture really changed that much? Sure the Bengals have been to the playoffs seven times but they are still nowhere near winning a Super Bowl.

Winning the last two games of the season, was it that big of a deal?

Maybe for Buffalo it was, but for the Bengals all it did was show what Marvin Lewis’ team could have done all year but didn’t! Yeah, by the way, I hate to tell everybody this but the Lions and Ravens are just mediocre teams. It’s not like they went to New England and beat the Patriots. Remember this, the Bengals absolutely laid down against the Bears and the Vikings. Fans who want to blame anything other than Mike brown and Marvin Lewis are nuts.

Mike Brown doesn’t care about you (the fans)!

Trust me, he doesn’t. He does nothing to make going to a Bengals game special for fans. Until this year there was nothing honoring Bengals’ legends and there is still no Hall of Fame, no Ring of Honor and no jerseys retired. Tell me how the hell can the Bengals not retire the jerseys of Anthony Munoz and Reggie Williams? These were special players, and more importantly, special men who contributed more to this city than most ever have or ever could. Remember Brown got one of the sweetest deals in stadium history and the people of Hamilton County are paying for this stadium! But Brown doesn’t care. Now I’m not one of these people that thinks he doesn’t want to win, no I am a person that thinks he has no clue how to win.

Conclusion

I have spent the last few years interviewing a lot of former Bengals and have heard horror stories about Spinney Field, things like players paying for their own drinks at practice and having to bring their own towels from home to shower after practice; and trust me, I have been told a lot worse than this! The only way fans can make their voices heard is to stop buying tickets, stop buying merchandise and flood Bengals’ offices with calls complaining about Mike Brown and the way he runs his business! Get rid of your season tickets and just watch on television. That’s what I started doing after the 2013 season. I will always be a Bengals fan but that doesn’t mean I have to give anymore money to a little old man who clearly has no clue what the hell he is doing!

By the way, if you are reading this Mike Brown and you really want to win, start out by getting a bigger scouting staff and stop making your assistant coaches do it. Maybe quit all the nepotism inside the organization and get qualified people to do what needs to be done. Get rid of the assistants on staff that have done nothing to improve this team (Yes Offensive Line Coach Paul Alexander, I mean you). Finally Mike Brown, start treating your former players better and honor what they have done for your organization.
