Predicting the Buffalo Bills’ 2017 Record

The Buffalo Bills are much stronger than last year. From the looks of it, they are better on paper, but the season will tell how they are. Sean McDermott is looking to make a statement as a first time head coach and what better way to do it than with a team that needs leadership? I’m not expecting the Bills to make a big splash, but they should make a big improvement from last year.

Week 1: New York Jets

The very first game of the season for the Bills is against the rebuilding Jets. New York is in rebuilding mode for the next couple of years. They are a mess right now, and Buffalo should easily beat them.

Score: 24-7 Bills win

Record: 1-0

Week 2: @ Carolina Panthers

Sean McDermott will make his return to Carolina to face his former team of the past 6 season. I think that drafting Christian McCaffrey makes the Panthers rushing offense dangerous and Cam Newton is looking to get back on track. This game will be a tough one for Buffalo, but if they can pressure Newton and keep Luke Kuechly off of Tyrod Taylor they will be in good shape.

Score: 17-14 Bills win

Record: 2-0

Week 3: Denver Broncos

No matter who the Broncos put as their starting quarterback, whether it’s Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch, I don’t see either one of them being a threat to the Bills. If Buffalo can figure out the Broncos defense, the Bills should handle them easily.

Score: 20-13 Bills win

Record: 3-0

Week 4: @ Atlanta Falcons

The Bills tend to struggle against top teams in the NFL. In my opinion, the Bills last win against a top team was in 2014 against the Green Bay Packers. Granted, they did beat the New England Patriots 16-0 in the first game last season, but the Pats did not have Tom Brady. The Packers had Aaron Rodgers playing against the Bills. Since then, they have been unsuccessful. The Bills will need to figure out how to slow down a powerful offense that has Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman. Expect this game to be a high scoring one but the Falcons fly away with the win.

Score: 35-27 Falcons win

Record: 3-1

Week 5: @ Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals drafted speedy receiver John Ross to give Andy Dalton another weapon along with A.J. Green. Their offense looks good, but what about the defense? I think Geno Atkins is the only threat to the Bills offense. Keep Atkins off of Taylor and LeSean McCoy and the Bills should run away with this one.

Score: 24-14 Bills win

Record: 4-1

Week 6: Bye Week
Week 7: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jameis Winston and the Bucs are getting stronger every year. They already have a nice passing game with Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson. Now they added tight end O.J. Howard in the draft, which is more of a threat. With the Bills secondary still in rebuilding mode, they will have their hands full.

Score: 28-17 Bucs win

Record: 4-2

Week 8: Oakland Raiders

One of the toughest games for the Bills this season. Derek Carr is coming back from a leg injury and the defense has improved. No doubt that this will be a challenge for Buffalo. I also think that the Bills will remember what they did to the Raiders last year when they went up 24-9 in the third quarter. Only this time, they shouldn’t blow that lead. Expect a high scoring game.

Score: 41-35 Bills win

Record: 5-2

Week 9: @ New York Jets

Just like the first game, the Bills should easily take this game and the season series. Expect the Bills to win and continue their momentum.

Score: 28-14 Bills win

Record: 6-2

Week 10: New Orleans Saints

Trading away Brandin Cooks to the New England Patriots put the Saints in official rebuilding mode. Drew Brees is not getting any younger, I just don’t see how the Bills could lose this game, especially with it being in Buffalo.

Score: 27-10 Bills win

Record: 7-2

Week 11: @ Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are an interesting opponent. They will either play as the best team in the league or not show up. Drafting Mike Williams gives Philip Rivers his true #1 receiver, and having Melvin Gordon behind him running the ball makes the offense dangerous. This game will be a shootout, but the Chargers squeaking by.

Score: 38-31 Chargers win

Record: 7-3

Week 12: @ Kansas City Chiefs

Once again, a tough opponent for the Bills. Playing in Arrowhead stadium is tough, but it’s even more of a challenge to win there. I think the Bills will give the Chiefs a scare at moments, but as long as Alex Smith is doing well in the regular season, the Bills continue to fall short.

Score: 21-13 Chiefs win

Record: 7-4

Week 13: New England Patriots

The Patriots won the Super Bowl and are a winner in the off season. Brandin Cooks is likely to be Tom Brady’s new #1 receiver and Stephon Gilmore will make his return to Buffalo. With Tom Brady playing like he is young again, he could light up the scoreboard. But if he takes hits like he always does against Buffalo, then it could be a different story.

Score: 30-24 Patriots win

Record: 7-5

Week 14: Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck should have another outstanding year like always, but not the Colts as a team. The Bills need to stop Luck from throwing all over them and they will be in great shape to pick up a win.

Score; 24-10 Bills win

Record: 8-5

Week 15: Miami Dolphins

The first meeting between these rivals will be one to watch. With the game being in Buffalo in December, I would expect the Bills to beat the Dolphins, but they cannot let Jay Ajayi rush for over 200 yards like both games last year.

Score: 29-20 Bills win

Record: 9-5

Week 16: @ New England Patriots

It’s already tough to face the Patriots, but to face them in New England is tougher. With them being on the home field and taking the first game against the Bills, they could take the season series.

Score: 27-14 Patriots win

Record: 9-6

Week 17: @ Miami Dolphins

The final game of the regular season for them is against the Dolphins in which I gave the Bills the first game between these two. Playing in Miami will be a challenge, but I’m going to give the Bills the season series. The Bills owe the Dolphins from the two losses Miami gave them last year. Contain Ajayi and the passing game, and the Bills will be good to go.

Score: 24-20 Bills win

Record: 10-6

With a 10-6 record, the Bills have a high chance of ending their playoff drought and play in a wild card game for the first time since 1999. They may need help from other teams to clinch a spot, but with this record they have a better chance than others who are fighting for a spot.
