The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / The 10 Worst Owners in the NFL

The 10 Worst Owners in the NFL

New management needed
Publish Date: 01/22/2017

1) Dean Spanos, Los Angeles Chargers

Spanos is a lying manipulative jerk who happened to want a cash-strapped city to pay for more than half his new stadium. He also made the brilliant decision to can Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season; the guy knows absolutely nothing about football. Spanos has wasted Phillip Rivers career with incompetent coaches and morons for player personnel guys. I think everybody understands now why Archie Manning did not want his son going to San Diego. He turned his back on a fan base that had supported his team for more than half a century and is taking them to a city where no one wants them.

2) Jimmy Haslam, Cleveland Browns

If the top guy had not moved their team, this moron would be number one. He is a horrible owner that knows nothing about football and doesn’t seem to want to learn about it either. Plus the guy is a freaking criminal! His company, Pilot Flying J had to pay a $92 million penalty to the government and reimburse customers to the tune of $56 million after an FBI investigation had shown the company had defrauded them on gas rebates. He purchased the Browns for $1 billion in 2012 and has been just as bad at managing that business.

Haslam is the guy that drafted Johnny Manziel in the first round of the draft. That should be proof enough he has been bad, throw in trying to trade draft picks in a trade to the 49ers to get Head Coach Jim Harbaugh but somehow he leaked the deal and blew it. As a Browns fan, you would figure it could not get any worse after Art Modell? But somehow it has!

3) Daniel Snyder, Washington Redskins

Snyder is a thin-skinned egotistical little man that has made a once proud franchise not so impressive anymore. Some of his biggest hits follow, including signing Albert Haynesworth who was a complete bust. Then you have his signing of over the hill players like Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, and he traded for Donovan McNabb. Snyder has no football I.Q. and he is bad with his fan base also. When the economy took a downturn in 2008 and 2009, he sued season ticket-holders who couldn’t pay their bills. Snyder banned all signs at FedEx Field in 2009 because so many were critical of him (the ban was later lifted after backlash from fans).

4) Zygi Wilf, Minnesota Vikings

For most of his tenure, his head coaching hires have been an embarrassment they include Brad Childress, Mike Tice, and Leslie Frazier, it seems like he got it right with his last hire in Mike Zimmer. As a lot of owners did, he then extorted the state of Minnesota by threatening a move to Los Angeles. Of course, he won and got his Billion dollar stadium before for largely by the taxpayers.

This guy is also a crook, and it has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Wilf and his brother Mark and a cousin were also found liable by a New Jersey court for violating civil state racketeering laws and fleecing former business partners of shared revenue. The judge presiding over the trial claimed that Wilf used organized crime-like tactics to commit the fraud. Organized crime in New Jersey? And this guy is still an NFL owner! The Wilfs had to pay $84.5 million in damages as a result of the trial.

So he extorted Minnesota for a publicly-financed stadium, defrauded his former business partners, this man is truly a joke and should not even be allowed to own a team in the NFL.

5) Jed York, San Fransisco 49ers

Jed York is here simply because of who his daddy is and nothing else. The Niners under his leadership have chased off Jim Harbaugh they replaced him with Mike Tomsula and followed that up with Chip Kelly. The Niners need a QB and a ton of other positions filled, but the prospects to do that under York look bleak, to say the least.

6) The Ford Family, Detroit Lions

The Lions as a franchise are a joke, but look on the bright side at least they don’t seem to be criminals. They employed former G.M. Matt Millen for seven long years until firing him. They have chased off two of the greatest players in the history of the organization in Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson.

7) Stan Kroenke, Los Angeles Rams

This guy is a complete tool! How did he make his money you might ask? Will let me tell you he married the right woman. He married the daughter of Wal-Mart’s co-founder, but I guess he was hurting for money. Yeah right it comes down to this he is a greedy asshole who left because he wanted, even more, money. Plus throw in the fact that since taking over the Rams in 2010 his teams have been terrible and he kept Jeff Fisher around way too much time coaching them.

8) Jim Irsay, Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have been a success on the field since Jim Irsay took over the team in 1997. Irsay’s shortcomings are more of the personal variety Irsay, however, has not represented the team and the organization with much class. In 2014 Jim was arrested for suspicion of DUI and drug possession. It was reported that Irsay had had a long history with substance abuse. After the DUI charge, it was revealed that Irsay’s mistress was found dead of a drug overdose in a home Irsay controversially purchased with money belonging to the Indianapolis Colts. As for the DUI charge, it was reduced to an OWI plea, and Irsay was ultimately suspended for six games and fined $500,000 by the NFL. He is not as bad as his dad was, but he is gaining on him.

9) Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys

Could this owner end up in the hall of fame? For what? He won Super Bowls early on and then fired the man responsible for them in Jimmy Johnson. This guy even defended Greg Hardy as a good person. Maybe they will put him in the Hall of Fame because of the one billion dollar stadium he built. My only problem with that is almost half of that billion dollars was tax payer money.

10) Mike Brown, Cincinnati Bengals

15 years ago Brown may have been number one on this list, but things have gotten better in Cincinnati. My problem with Brown is still the constant refusal to get rid of Marvin Lewis who in thirteen years has zero playoff wins. He also employs guys like Offensive line coach Paul Alexander forever, even though he continually drafts offensive line who never get better under his tutelage. Plus his stadium deal with Cincinnati was tantamount to stealing; he is still a cheap man who as long as he makes a huge profit is fine. The older he gets, the better the Bengals do, maybe that’s because as they years go by, he has less and less say so.
