There is always that one player heading into a new season that no one mentions when they should. Under the new management of Sean McDermott and his new coaching staff, many players should be able to go back to their way of play instead of what they have had to deal with the past two years under Rex Ryan. Whether it’s offense or defense there will be players that make major improvements from last season. Who is that one player in Buffalo that should make a big impact that no one is paying attention to?
That one player is…
The beast that will have the biggest improvement will be defensive end Jerry Hughes. I like watching Hughes playing because he is one player that every can count on to make a couple plays a game. Hughes has 35.5 sacks in his career and 30.5 sacks since being in Buffalo. Hughes dominated under the 4-3 defense that was ran under former head coach Doug Marrone. With Rex Ryan in charge, Hughes still made big plays but didn’t play his game which caused him to decrease in both sacks and tackles.
With Sean McDermott, Hughes will dominate again
When McDermott was hired, it was said that he runs a 4-3 defensive scheme. He is the perfect fit for the Bills defense. We all saw what Buffalo can do under this scheme, they could very well be one of the top defenses in league once again. Especially with McDermott, who had the Carolina Panthers as a top 10 defense 4 out of his 6 seasons with them.
Bills fans can expect to see Hughes pressuring the quarterback and disrupt an offense whether it’s a pass or a run. How nice would it be to see Hughes get 10 sacks in a season again? If I was an opposing quarterback, I would have my eye on Hughes because he’s coming every play. He is quick, strong and he knows how to get past an offensive lineman.
Jerry Hughes should be the best defensive lineman for the Bills in 2017. I like Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams, but Jerry Hughes is more disruptive than them. Fans should be excited to see the defense play this year because even though they are in a rebuilding mode, the defense should definitely improve from last year. Players like Jerry Hughes who excel in a 4-3 scheme should have a great year.
