Another week in CFL football, another win for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. And now Jim Popp is out, at least as head coach, of the Montreal Alouettes. So the hosts of the Rouge, White & Blue CFL Podcast must be well optimistic going into week 14, right? Wellllllllllllllllllllllllll….

Co-host Joe Pritchard certainly has much to savor from last week’s slate of games, as his Bombers ran up a whopping 46 points against Dan “Saturday Night” LeFevour and the Toronto Argonauts; once again, surmises Joe, the Bombers are playing like anti-Edmonton Eskimos: Both teams have enough talent to hang with the opposition through either shootout or grind-it-out – only this year, it’s Winnipeg that’s closing out games properly.

Meanwhile, RWB co-host/Alouettes backer Os Davis grouses through yet another uninspiring loss (except for that punt block by Duron Carter – CFL play of the year thus far, in Os’s opinion) and is, yes, pessimistic about the future without or without the Popp albatross handing out the Montreal sideline. After all, Joe points out, defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe was prevented from leaving for Edmonton last December. By not promoting him to head coach now, the Alouettes seem certain not to retain him for 2017.

Joining the RWB duo this week is Lorne Goldenberg, a strength & conditioning coach with 30 years’ experience in the business as well as a devoted CFL fan — the only Argonauts season ticket-holder who lives in Pittsburgh, he claims. Lorne tells us about his career, including his time spent with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the early 1980s when “strength & conditioning coach” was barely a thing. Lorne also relates some tales from his days working with hockey players from the NFL and other professional leagues, including a bit about Wayne Gretzky from back when The Great One was co-owner of the Argos.

Finally, Lorne joins the RWB co-hosts in picking the winners in next week’s slate of CFL games, with some tough choices of the heart-vs-head variety required.
