Week 5 of the 2017 college football season is in the books; following are seven takeaways from the weekend’s slate of games…
1) Butch Jones will be fired
Jones was already on thin ice, but on Saturday the Volunteers were destroyed by the Georgia Bulldogs; coach Butch Jones will be fired sometime between now and the end of the season.
2) Washington State is for real
Mike Leach has the Cougars playing at a very high level and if this continues, you could have the biggest Apple Cup ever played at the end of the season.
3) The Georgia Bulldogs are a worthy challenger to Alabama
The past few years the SEC Championship game has been a foregone conclusion. That will not be the case this year, as the Georgia Bulldogs look like a complete football team that Alabama may have their hands full with. The Bulldogs are balanced on offense and dominant on defense.
4) Saquon Barkley really can do it all
Saquon Barkley on Saturday added a touchdown pass to his Heisman Trophy résumé as he continues to amazes fans all around the country. Barkley must be the Heisman favorite as of right now and at the rate he’s going, he’ll be very hard to catch.
5) LSU will also be looking for a new coach
It’s one thing to be beaten by Mississippi State; you can survive that loss, but losing to Troy at LSU is unforgivable.
6) North Carolina State is for real
The Wolfpack looked good again on Saturday and, with Clemson coming to North Carolina, the Pack have a chance to have a very interesting season.
7) USC was way overrated
I don’t say this because of a close loss to a very good Washington State team. I base this on what I have seen all season. That includes a life-or-death game for more than three quarters against Western Michigan and escaping with an overtime win at home against a mediocre Texas team.
