It’s the off-season for the Cleveland Browns, in case you didn’t know so, fans are left wondering what is going to unfold over the next couple months. Contracts will expire and players will depart for other opportunities. The Browns have money to spend in free agency and I expect them to address some needs. One of our needs is defense. We not only need to improve, but we need valuable depth as well.  Another way to fill a position of need is the draft and the Cleveland Browns own the 17th overall pick in the first round.

One of their options with that pick could be Byron Murphy who played cornerback for the Washington Huskies from 2016-2018. After red-shirting the 2016 season, he became an instant starter the following year. A broken foot limited him to just six games, but Murphy did make an impact. He recorded 16 tackles, two interceptions, seven passes defended and a forced fumble.

The cornerback returned strong and able to start all 14 games in his sophomore campaign and his production improved as expected. His final stats line was 58 tackles, four interceptions, 13 defended passes and a forced fumble. Murphy finished as one of the highest graded cornerbacks last year.

Byron Murphy is predicted to be selected by the Raiders with the 24th overall pick in a recent mock draft by Mel Kiper Jr. He also had this to say, “I love Murphy. To me, Murphy could go higher than that…I could see him going top-15 to 20 very easily.”

That just confirms why I believe the Cleveland Browns will be looking at the cornerback. He is a physical corner that plays man coverage as good as any anyone. Murphy’s instincts and speed help him close gaps fast. He is also very physical despite his size (5’11” 182 lbs). Watch the film, this kid can hit! Murphy also knows how to attack the receiver, he has a knack for breaking up passes (20 in 20 games).

Imagine pairing Murphy with Denzel Ward. They can be a dangerous duo for years to come. Not to mention, the Browns still have Terrance Mitchell and E.J. Gaines on the roster too so there is no pressure to start him outside. He can be just as effective playing the slot. Byron Murphy would definitely improve our secondary and add much neededdepth.
